Faculty Appointments and Promotions 2023-2024

We’d like to recognize the faculty appointments and promotions that have been approved by the School of Medicine in 2023 and 2024. Our departmental faculty are academically prolific and the teaching, research, and service contributions to the medical field and to our communities are profound. The department, UPMC, and the University of Pittsburgh take great pride in your accomplishments, and we are pleased to highlight the following appointments and promotions:

Inspiring Philanthropy: A Family’s Legacy of Giving Lives On

Dr. Carl R. Fuhrman was a consummate scholar and educator who tirelessly taught thousands of medical students, residents, and fellows for more than three decades. His passion for teaching was renowned both within and outside the Radiology department. Countless medical students were inspired by him to join Radiology, and he had a direct and profound impact on the hundreds of residents he trained over his long and illustrious career. After Dr. Fuhrman’s passing in 2020, his sister, Barbara Pugel, became deeply involved in the Radiology department to honor his legacy. Barbara has been his biggest cheerleader, ensuring that his passion for education lives on through philanthropy.

In June, Barbara rallied her family to make the largest donation in Pitt Radiology history. This incredible gift will be used to digitize Dr. Fuhrman’s research, aiding in the education of current and future minds in the residency and fellowship programs.

R1 Welcome Picnic!

We had the pleasure of hosting the annual UPMC Department of Radiology Resident Welcome Picnic this past Sunday to help our new first-year residents feel at home in our department. This year the fun-filled gathering was set at the beautiful Mellon Park, and offered a relaxed environment for residents, faculty, and their families to connect and unwind. We enjoyed delicious food, engaging lawn games, and lively conversations as we met our new colleagues and made new friendships. This annual picnic marks the beginning of our residents’ rewarding journey in our department and we are thrilled to welcome them into our radiology family!

This year, the welcome picnic also doubled as an opportunity to help celebrate our 4th year residents passing the ABR Core examination.

Welcome to Pittsburgh, welcome to radiology, and congratulations!

Philippines Lecture – Dr. Gerritt

Dr. Gerritt Lagemann presented a one-hour invited international lecture at the Institute of Radiology at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Manila, Philippines, on July 4th, 2024. St. Luke’s Medical Center is the most prestigious medical center in the Philippines. It also has the largest radiology residency in the Philippines, with 7-8 residents per class. Approximately 100 Filipino radiology residents, fellows, and attendings were present at the lecture, either in person or virtually online. At the completion of my invited lecture, Dr. Lagemann was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Head of the Institute of Radiology at St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Congratulations Dr. Novelli and thank you for your tremendous service to the profession!

Please join us in congratulating Paula Novelli, MD, FSIR who has been honored with the Lifetime Service Award of the American Board of Radiology. This award recognizes exceptional dedication to physician education and service to the field of Radiology. Dr. Novelli is the first UPMC Radiologist ever to receive this prestigious award which is earned only after a minimum of 15 years of exemplary volunteer service to the ABR. Recipients must demonstrate enormous commitment and achievement in support of the ABR mission. Of the 1000+ volunteers affiliated with the ABR, fewer than 2% of individuals receive this honor in any given year. This substantial and long-term service helps establish and maintain the highest quality and educational standards for diagnostic and interventional radiologists alike across the US!

Congratulations Dr. Novelli and thank you for your tremendous service to the profession!
